National Diploma & Foundation year

Foundation Final Piece & Exhibition

This project was inspired by the loss of my Grandad just a week before we started this project. I then decided to look at artists and designers that were inspired by a personal experience or emotions linked to a certain event. A large part of my work was researching the meaning of colours to get an accurate portrail of my emotions at the time. I also wanted my last ever project to be very visual and interesting to look at while being extremely expressive so you could understand my feelings just by looking at the garment. That is when i decided to involve hand casts in some way as they are one of the most expressive parts of the human body. The hands grasping at the back of the dress are a visualy way of showing how you can never fully let go of a person, litrally.

Foundation Year - Book Making Project

These pages are some artist research and sample experimenting i did in addition to the book Making project. I created samples in response to the artists to give me inspiration.

Topic of our choice
18th Century Fashion

This was a project which we had to choose our own topic to do our project on. I chose 18th century Fashion as my starting point. This is a sample page i did when looking at some images of fabric manipulation techniques used in the 18th century. I created a stitched piece of which i used lots of different fine materials such as lace and cotton.

After researching the 18th Century I created this corset as my final piece. To create this piece I chose all my favorite techniques that were used in that time such as the pulled fabric on the front and the lace. I also wanted to interpret my own twist so throughout my project I experimented with modern day techniques such as, waxing material, dying with coffee and printing newspaper to add a more old fashioned vintage look.

MECHANICAL PROJECT

These are some large A2 drawings i did in addition to some primary photographs I took at a company called VWM. The top image was inspired by an open watch and some interesting cog shapes I found in the machinery photographs. The bottom image was inspired by the cog shapes and colours I found wihtin a certain image. To create the really rusty look I found in the image I orange and yellow ink then used a pipette to apply bleach.

In response to the mechanical project I created the drawing and painting on the left inspired by all the colours I found in the photographs. After creating lots of design ideas I finally decided to make a head piece inspired by these shapes and colours. I used collaged fabric which I stitched together using a sewing machine and used techniques such as dying fabric and pleating to create the band.

National Diploma Year 2 - Sketchbook work

These are some of my design development pages for the surface pattern project. I used flowers as my starting point. These pages are evidence of my sampling of which I did, tie dye, stencils, computer manipulation using Adobe Photoshop and batik.

From my design pages I created my final piece. This pattern for this dress was inspired by a manipulated image I created of roses. I then screen printed the dress using black and added fabric flowers I made to create an interesting bright feature.
