Assessment Piece

At the end of the Slueths, Spies and Lies project I had to choose one piece of work to put up on my board for people to see. As knit was a huge part of my project I chose to create a board of some of my faverouite samples I made.

I also added a photograph of the topic of my project so you can see the connection between my samples and development in response to my project. I chose 3 samples that were made using a different method, such as, Fairisle, Lace punch and pleatting.

1M x 1M Drawing

This was a drawing I created by looking at the images I took for my Slueths project. I used markings and textiles samples to respond to difference textures and marks seen and used in my work so far.

I then had to deconstruct the drawing to create a totally different out come. I started making a more 3D constructional piece.

Slueths, Spies & lies - Task 2 - Critically evaluating.

From the beginning of my sketchbook you can see how I have already begun to create a colour scheme based on my research. In response to my photographs I started experimenting with different techniques using a range of media such as fine liner, water based paints and coloured paper, to create different working methods. I started by using images as my primary research ,looking at both the building as a whole and smaller sections that included more detail and structure that could have been of interest. The main interest of the building was the dark grotty colours that over took and hid such a sacred and religious building, creating a huge contrast. I feel I did really well at exploring the tones and shades within the building by looking closer at it, rather than focusing on the simple brown, cream and beige.
However, I do feel that I could have explored more with different types of paints such as oil or acrylic, to compare the different textures and tones I would get out of the difference in thickness and the way it paints creating different strokes.

I also tried to incorporate samples from my knit workshop in my sketchbook so you could visually picture the kind of ideas I had and what structure they were to take. In relation to this I researched two designers, one that created structural knit garments, and the other inspired by architecture, much like myself. The purpose of researching other designers is to see how they have interpreted that subject and turned it into a garment. This is so I could take inspiration from either the techniques used or the way it was interpreted. I found this a huge help as it inspired many ideas and thoughts, as I wasn’t sure how I could create a knitted structural piece to become a garment, after looking into how others have created similar pieces I was full of great ideas.

When looking at other peoples sketchbooks I noticed that many pages were very blank, clean and only one image to a page. I have a very different style and I am a naturally messy worker. I believe this is also a really interesting way to work as my book appears more tactile and interesting. I love to fill the page with interesting drawings, sketches and design illustration. This is so that as I am creating different patterns and ideas I can simply draw ideas that appear as I am working on an illustration as I find this way it inspires me with many new ideas and possibilities. Although now I am doing a digital image workshop I think I will try and present my patterns in a more clear way and on cleaner pages as this presentation did have a large impact on how the image was viewed.

Summer project

Summer Project - Dog

For the summer project I had to make a dog. I wanted to create a rag doll style dog so i experimented with dying techniques to get an old vintage look. I used coffee to dye the fabric and stitched yarns and wool to the ears to create more texture.
